This Ceramic Backflow Incense Burner is shaped as a cascade of tiered lotus leaves in a glossy blue-green glaze, with a small pool at the base where two painted koi rest among the leaves. A backflow incense cone sits in the open pod at the top, and its cool smoke sinks and pours down the leaf tiers like a miniature waterfall before settling in the pool. At about 4.5 inches wide, it suits desks, tea tables, altars, and meditation shelves.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Koi fish: In Chinese folk tradition, the word for fish sounds like the word for surplus, so koi have long been regarded as a symbol of abundance, and in feng shui lore the koi is also traditionally associated with perseverance and achievement. Here two small koi sit in the leaf pool below the falling smoke, as if gliding through water.
Lotus leaves and pod: Rising clean from muddy water to bloom, the lotus is traditionally regarded in Buddhist and East Asian art as a symbol of purity and quiet emergence. The burner builds its whole form around that imagery: the cone rests in an opened lotus pod, and broad curling leaf tiers carry the smoke down.
Falling-water composition: The backflow channel turns ordinary smoke into a visible cascade, so the piece reads as a small landscape of lotus, water, and fish rather than a plain holder.

Why You'll Love This Burner
- A moving centerpiece: The cascading smoke effect gives the lotus-and-koi scene a quiet sense of motion while the incense burns.
- Compact, grounded scale: At 11.5*11*10cm and 255-283 g, it has enough heft to sit steadily on a shelf or tea table without feeling fragile.
- Distinctive glaze: The layered leaf forms catch the glaze differently at every edge, so each burner reads slightly unique.
Care Instructions
Use only on a stable, heat-safe surface, and never leave burning incense unattended. After the burner cools, wipe away the oily residue left by backflow cones with a dry paper towel or a soft cloth before it builds up; a barely damp cloth can finish the job, then dry thoroughly. Keep it away from prolonged moisture and harsh cleaners, and store it dry when not in use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it come with incense?
No. The package is the incense burner only, sold without incense. Backflow cones are needed for the waterfall effect; standard cones and sticks can also be used if they rest securely in the top opening or pool.
Why is my smoke not flowing downward?
The cascade only works with backflow cones, which produce cool, dense smoke. Use a fresh backflow cone in the open pod at the top, keep the burner away from drafts, and make sure the smoke channels are clean of old resin buildup.
How do I clean the sticky residue inside?
Once cooled, wipe the channels and pool with a dry paper towel or soft cloth to lift the oily film, then dry completely. Avoid soaking or abrasive scrubbers, which can dull the glaze.
Which color should I expect to arrive?
Choose from the blue, black, or red versions listed as options. Because the piece is hand-glazed and natural materials vary, small differences in tone and pattern between units are normal.
Is it safe to use while I work or relax nearby?
Yes, with normal incense precautions: place it on a level, heat-safe surface away from papers and fabrics, keep the burning cone in view, and ventilate the room lightly if you burn for a long session.
