This Celadon Kung Fu Tea Cup is a small handleless tasting cup in high-fired ceramic, glazed in a soft jade-green celadon with a fine crackle and finished with a gilded rim. The painted motif — koi, lotus, plum blossom, or butterfly — sweeps across the cup wall in gold and deep cobalt, and the 100-milliliter bowl is sized for pouring tea in the gongfu style.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
- Koi fish: The Chinese word for fish sounds like the word for surplus, so the koi has long been read in folk tradition as a symbol of abundance, and its steady upstream movement as a picture of perseverance; paired koi also appear alongside yin-yang imagery. On this cup, golden koi are painted mid-swim around the celadon wall.
- Lotus: Rising clean from muddy water to bloom, the lotus is traditionally regarded as a symbol of purity and quiet emergence in Buddhist tradition. The golden lotus version sets lotus leaves and blooms in a cobalt band around the cup.
- Plum blossom: One of the "Four Gentlemen" of Chinese painting, the plum blossom opens in late winter and has traditionally been admired as a sign of resilience and quiet elegance; its blossoming branches trail across the plum blossom option.
- Butterfly: In Feng Shui tradition the butterfly is a motif associated with change and lightness, and the butterfly-flower option pairs it with painted blooms in the same gold-and-cobalt palette.
Product Details
- Item Type: Cup
- Size: 6.5cm*4.8cm*100ml
- Material: Ceramic
- Cup capacity: 100 milliliters
- Options: Eight scene options — butterfly flower, golden lotus, koi fish, and plum blossom in two color palettes
- Ps: The other cup accessories are only used as a photo prop and are Not included in the cup.
- Note: The cups are fired at high temperature by experienced artisans; because kiln temperature and humidity shift during firing, the pattern, color, size, and design vary slightly from piece to piece, which is part of each cup's individual character. Measurements are taken by hand, so there is a slight deviation, and due to lighting and screen differences the color may vary a little from the picture.
Why You'll Love This Tea Cup
- The crackled celadon ground with gilded rim and painted motif gives the cup a distinctive, recognizable look in the hand and on the tea tray.
- The 100-milliliter bowl suits gongfu pouring — enough for two or three short rounds of oolong or pu-erh.
- Because each cup is kiln-fired by hand, no two pieces carry exactly the same pattern, so yours is one of a kind.
Care Instructions
Rinse the cup with warm water after use and dry it with a soft cloth; avoid abrasive scouring pads and harsh detergents, which can dull the gilded rim and painted lines. Do not leave the cup soaking for long periods, and store it dry, upright, and away from perfumes or chemicals.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much tea does the cup hold?
About 100 milliliters. The bowl measures 6.5cm across by 4.8cm tall, a typical size for a gongfu tasting cup shared over two or three pours.
Is the tea tray or gaiwan in the pictures included?
No. The cup is sold on its own; the tray, lid, and other cups seen in the listing are photo props only and are not part of the package.
Will the painted design match the photos exactly?
Close, but not identical. The cups are high-fired by hand, and the kiln's temperature and humidity cause slight variation in pattern, color, and design between pieces — that variation is what gives each cup its individual character.
How do I choose among the eight options?
The eight options are four painted scenes — butterfly flower, golden lotus, koi fish, and plum blossom — each offered in two color palettes. The function and size are the same across all eight, so choose purely by the motif and palette you prefer.
