The Cute Elephant Purple Clay Incense Burner with a Backflow Smoke Waterfall is a small seated baby elephant modeled in dark, matte purple clay, shown covering its eyes, ears, or mouth in the classic three poses. A backflow cone sits in a socket on the elephant's head, and cool smoke spills down along its trunk and forelegs, pooling like a slow waterfall on the surface below. Sold singly or as a three-piece set, it is a desk, shelf, or tea-table ornament that works as a figurine even when unlit.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil: The three covering poses form one of East Asia's best-known moral motifs. The idea is traditionally traced to the Confucian teaching to look not at, listen not to, and speak not of what is improper, and it was popularized worldwide by the carved three monkeys at the Nikko Toshogu shrine in Japan, where the figures have long been read as a reminder of discretion and mindful conduct. Here the lesson is rendered playfully on chubby elephant calves.
Elephant: In Chinese folk tradition the word for elephant sounds like the word for auspiciousness, and elephant imagery has traditionally been regarded as a symbol of peace, steadiness, and good fortune; in Buddhist tradition the elephant likewise appears as an image of gentle strength. The rounded, smiling carvings lean into that association as decoration.
Backflow design: The smoke channels run from the head socket down the trunk, so dense cool smoke falls instead of rising—a visual effect of airflow, not a property of the clay.

Why You'll Love This Incense Burner
- Each pose is instantly readable, and the three figures work as a matched set or as standalone characters with different expressions.
- The unglazed purple clay gives the piece a soft, matte, hand-modeled texture rather than a shiny glaze.
- At roughly 120-131g per figure, the burner is stable during use and easy to move between desk and tea tray.
Care Instructions
- Use on a level, heat-safe surface; protect delicate tabletops beneath the smoke pool.
- Let the burner cool fully after each use, then brush or wipe away cone residue with a soft, dry cloth.
- The porous clay should not be soaked or cleaned with detergents; keep water contact minimal.
- Never leave burning incense unattended, and keep away from drafts, curtains, and pets' reach.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of incense does this burner need?
Backflow cone incense. The cone burns downward through a channel in the figure, and only this style produces the falling smoke waterfall; standard sticks will not work with the head socket.
Why is my smoke rising instead of flowing down?
The waterfall depends on cool, dense smoke sinking in still air. Drafts from fans, open windows, or air conditioning break the flow, and low-quality cones can produce hot, smoky bursts. Try a sheltered spot and a fresh cone.
Should I buy one elephant or the three-piece set?
All three poses—covering the eyes, ears, and mouth—complete the traditional motif and share the same footprint. A single figure is a smaller, cheaper starting point; the set reads as a deliberate trio on a shelf or tea table.
Is the unglazed clay hard to keep clean?
Residue brushes off easily once cool. Because the purple clay is unglazed and slightly porous, avoid washing it in water or soap; a dry soft cloth is enough for normal upkeep.
How big and heavy is each figure?
Each elephant measures about 6.6*8.5*9.3cm and weighs roughly 119-131g depending on the pose, so it sits firmly on a desk without tipping when a cone is lit.
