The Dragon & Lotus Ceramic Backflow Incense Burner is a glossy deep-brown ceramic sculpture of a coiled dragon rising from an open lotus blossom. Every part of the form serves the smoke: a backflow cone rests between the dragon's horns, the smoke pours from its open mouth down carved channels, and it pools and spills over the lotus petals below in a slow waterfall. A raised spherical holder in one claw takes a standard stick incense as well. At 16cm tall, it works as both a functioning incense burner and a quiet display piece on an altar, tea table, or shelf.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Dragon (Long): In Chinese tradition the dragon is a mythical creature and one of the twelve zodiac signs, traditionally regarded as a symbol of strength and authority and long treated as an auspicious figure in decorative art. Here the dragon is fully sculptural rather than painted: its body coils upward with individually carved scales and a flowing mane, and its open mouth doubles as the channel through which the smoke descends.
Lotus: Rising clean from muddy water to bloom, the lotus is traditionally regarded as a symbol of purity and quiet emergence in Buddhist and South Asian traditions, and it has long appeared in Chinese art as a seat, vessel, and ornamental form. The burner's basin is shaped as a wide-open lotus flower, so the cascading smoke settles into its petals like mist gathering on still water.

Why You'll Love This Incense Burner
- Two incense formats in one piece: the cone seat on the horns creates the waterfall effect, while the claw-held sphere works as a stick-incense holder for everyday burning.
- Fully sculpted, not molded flat: the scales, mane, claws, and petal veins are carved in relief, so the piece reads as a decorative ornament even when it is cold.
- Self-contained display: the wide lotus base catches the pooling smoke and any ash, keeping the effect centered on the piece instead of drifting across the room.
Care Instructions
- Use backflow cones for the cascade effect, and never leave burning incense unattended; place the burner on a stable, heat-safe surface.
- Let the ceramic cool fully before moving it.
- Once cool, tap out ash and wipe the glossy glaze with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth; avoid abrasive cleaners that would scratch the finish.
- Store dry when not in use.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the waterfall smoke effect actually work?
A backflow cone burns on the seat between the dragon's horns. Cooler, denser smoke sinks through the mouth and down the carved body, then collects in the open lotus basin and spills over the petals — the sculpture is essentially a channel for that descending flow.
Can I use regular stick incense, and is any incense included?
Yes — the small sphere held up in the dragon's claw doubles as a stick-incense holder, so the piece works with ordinary incense sticks as well as backflow cones. No incense is included; the package is the burner only.
What footprint does it need, and is it stable?
It measures 13*9*16cm (Length*Width*Height) and weighs 420g. The lotus basin forms a broad, low base under an upright dragon, so it stands steadily on a shelf, desk, or altar without feeling tippy.
Will resin and ash build up on the carved scales?
Some resin drip is normal with cone incense. After the burner has fully cooled, wipe the glazed surfaces with a dry or barely damp soft cloth; the glossy finish wipes clean easily, but avoid scouring pads on the carved relief.
