The Purple Clay Backflow Incense Burner with an Avalokitesvara Buddha Figure is modeled as a serene bust of Avalokitesvara in matte gray-purple clay: half-closed eyes, a gentle smile, a topknot beneath a hood, and a large leaf-shaped aureole rising behind the head. One raised arm ends in a lotus-bud socket that holds a backflow incense cone, and the smoke spills down the carved folds of the robe into a shallow pool at the base; a small hole at the opposite side takes stick incense. It is made for incense use and quiet display on an altar shelf, tea table, or meditation corner.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Avalokitesvara: In East Asian Buddhist tradition Avalokitesvara is revered as a bodhisattva embodying compassion, and the calm downcast gaze and soft smile seen here follow that longstanding iconography of serenity and inward attention. The figure is rendered as decorative religious art on the burner.
Aureole: The leaf-shaped disc rising behind the head reflects the halo motif of Buddhist art, in which radiance about an enlightened figure traditionally signifies wisdom.
Lotus: The cone socket is shaped as an upright lotus bud. Rising clean from muddy water to bloom, the lotus is traditionally regarded as a symbol of purity and quiet emergence in Buddhist art, and it appears here as the point from which the smoke begins its descent.

Why You'll Love This Incense Burner
- The carved face, headdress, and robe folds give the piece a recognizable devotional-art character even when it is unlit.
- Backflow smoke runs down the robe and gathers in the base pool, turning a short cone session into a slow, waterfall-like display.
- Cone and stick incense are both accommodated, so you can choose between the cascade effect and a simple single stick.
- At 297–381 g of solid purple clay it feels substantial and sits steadily on a shelf or altar table.
Care Instructions
- Use on a stable, level surface away from drafts, curtains, and paper, and never leave burning incense unattended.
- Confirm the cone or stick is fully extinguished before setting the piece aside.
- Once completely cool, rinse residual resin from the lotus socket and robe channels with lukewarm water, then dry with a soft cloth.
- Handle with care — the raised arm, aureole, and fine facial detail are ceramic and can chip if dropped.
- Store dry when not in use; avoid detergents and abrasive pads on the clay surface.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the two versions listed?
The listing offers an Avalokitesvara figure version and a Buddha figure version, and the two sizes and weights shown in the details (H: 15.7cm*L: 10cm*W: 7cm / 381g and H:15.2cm*L:10.8cm*W:7.5cm / 297g) correspond to these versions. Check the option name when ordering if you have a preference for one figure.
What kind of incense does this burner work with?
The lotus-bud socket on the raised arm is for backflow cones, which have a hole through the base that channels smoke downward. The small hole at the side of the base holds standard stick incense. Plain solid cones will not create the waterfall effect.
Why is my smoke not cascading down the figure?
Backflow smoke is easily disturbed. Use fresh backflow cones, place the burner in a still room away from fans, air conditioning, and open windows, and allow the cone a minute to settle — the cool, dense smoke then follows the carved robe folds into the pool.
How do I clean cone resin off the clay?
Wait until the piece is fully cool, then rinse the socket and channels with lukewarm water to dissolve the resin and wipe with a soft cloth. Harsh detergents and abrasive scrubbing should be kept off the matte clay surface.
Will the finish look exactly like the photos?
The overall design will match, but each burner is handmade from natural purple clay, so tone and surface texture vary slightly, and lighting or screen settings can shift the apparent color.
