The Hand Painted Koi Fish and Lotus Ceramic Kung Fu Tea Cup is a small footed cup with a brushed silver-toned metallic sheen, over which an orange-red koi is hand-painted swimming past an open lotus bloom, teal seed pods and waving water grasses, finished at the base with a teal-and-red geometric band. Holding about 45 ml and arriving in a gift box, it is made for the small-cup rhythm of kung fu tea — a few sips per infusion, repeated slowly.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Koi Fish: In Chinese folk tradition the koi is traditionally regarded as a symbol of perseverance and achievement, and because the Chinese word for fish sounds like the word for surplus, it has long been read as an emblem of abundance. Here the koi is painted mid-swim in warm iron-red tones among the aquatic plants, the classic fish-and-waterweed composition of Chinese decorative art.
Lotus: Rising clean from muddy water to bloom on the surface, the lotus has traditionally been regarded in Buddhist and East Asian tradition as a symbol of purity and quiet emergence. The painted lotus beside the koi places the two motifs together as they have been paired for centuries on porcelain and lacquer.

Why You'll Love This Teacup
- A painted scene, not a decal: The koi-and-lotus composition wraps the cup's flared wall, so the story reads as you turn the cup between your hands.
- True tasting size: At about 45 ml and 47 g, it fits a palm and delivers each infusion in a few clean mouthfuls, the way gongfu tea is meant to be drunk.
- Gift box included: The 11cm*11cm box means it is ready to hand over for housewarmings, Mid-Autumn tables, or a teacher's desk.
Care Instructions
- Rinse after use and wash gently with warm water and a soft cloth; avoid abrasive pads that can scratch the painted, lustrous surface.
- Avoid harsh detergents, microwave and dishwasher use, and sudden extreme temperature changes.
- Dry fully before storing, and keep the cup in its box or a dry cabinet when not in use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the cup made of silver?
No — the listed material is ceramic. The cup simply has a metallic silver-toned glaze and finish, over which the koi and lotus scene is hand-painted and kiln-fired.
How much tea does it hold, and is that enough?
About 45 milliliters, which is the classic size for kung fu (gongfu) tea: small cups let each short steep be tasted at its peak, and you refill often rather than nursing one large mug.
Will my cup's painting match the listing photo exactly?
Very close, but not identical. Each piece is hand-painted and fired at high temperature, so the kiln's natural changes mean the pattern, tones and brushwork vary slightly from cup to cup while keeping the same overall design.
Does it arrive ready for gifting?
Yes. The cup ships in its own 11cm*11cm gift box, so no extra wrapping is needed for a birthday, housewarming or holiday present for a tea drinker.
Can I drink other things from it?
You can, though it is shaped for tea. The flared rim suits oolong, pu-erh or green tea in small pours; strong staining drinks like coffee will be easier to keep the glaze clear of if rinsed right after use.
