The Green Sandalwood Calf Backflow Incense Burner is a small carved wooden calf, seated in a relaxed pose with curved horns, dark eyes and a broad muzzle, with an incense cone resting on a holder at the top of its head. When lit, cool smoke streams downward out of the calf's nostrils like a visible breath, making it a playful companion on a tea table, desk or meditation corner.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Backflow Incense Burner: Incense burners have stood in Chinese temples and scholars' studios for centuries, where burning incense was traditionally part of tea preparation, study and quiet contemplation. The backflow style — its deliberately cool, downward-pouring smoke — is a modern descendant of that incense culture, and here the smoke is routed through the figure to stream from the calf's nostrils.
Green Sandalwood: Sandalwood-family woods have long been carved and burned as incense materials in East Asian temple tradition, prized for their fine grain and warm aroma. This calf is carved from green sandalwood, a wood whose colour naturally deepens and shifts with light and age, so each figure carries its own tone.

Why You'll Love This Piece
- The twin smoke streams from the nostrils turn a plain incense cone into a small, moving spectacle — far more distinctive than a standard burner dish.
- Carved from solid green sandalwood with visible grain, so no two calves share exactly the same tone and figure.
- Its compact 55*47*44 mm footprint fits a shelf, tea tray or bedside table, and five cones are included to get you started.
Care Instructions
- Wipe the wood with a dry, soft cloth only; never soak it or rinse it under water.
- Use it on a stable, heat-safe surface, and empty the ash only after the cone has fully burned out.
- Keep the burner away from prolonged moisture, direct heat and harsh cleaners, and store it in a dry, ventilated place.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the smoke flow downward out of the nostrils?
This is a backflow design: the lit cone sits on the holder above the head, and the smoke it produces is cooler than air, so it sinks through internal channels inside the carving and pours out of the two nostril holes. Standard backflow (incense cone) cones work best — ordinary stick incense will not create the waterfall effect.
Will the wood stay this honey-brown colour?
Not exactly. Green sandalwood is a living wood whose colour naturally shifts and deepens with light exposure and age, and the listing notes that wood colour varies. Expect your calf's tone to differ from the photos and to change gradually over time.
Are incense cones included, and how long does one burn?
Yes — the package includes the burner with 5 cones. Burn time depends on the cone; the point is simply to supervise the burning, place the burner on a heat-safe surface, and let the ash cool completely before emptying.
Is it suitable as a gift for tea or meditation lovers?
It is a good fit for anyone who keeps a tea table or enjoys quiet incense moments: the piece is decorative even unlit, small enough for a desk, and arrives ready to use with cones included.
