The Chinese Koi Fish Lotus Leaf Pattern Ceramic Kung Fu Teacup is a small handleless tasting cup in a soft cream glaze, its gently flared rim shaped like an opening blossom and painted with drifting blue-green lotus leaves. Slender red koi swim along the lower body of the cup, and a raised foot ring keeps it steady on the table. At about 65 ml, it is sized for gongfu-style tea — a few careful pours per serving — and suits a tea tray, a desk ritual, or a quiet shelf display.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Koi fish: in Chinese folk tradition the word for fish sounds like the word for surplus, so the koi has long been regarded as an emblem of perseverance, achievement, and abundance, and it remains one of the most familiar motifs on Chinese porcelain. Here the koi are painted as slim red figures gliding beneath the water's surface of the glaze.
Lotus leaves: the lotus rises clean from muddy water to bloom above the surface, and in Buddhist and East Asian tradition it has long been regarded as a symbol of purity and quiet emergence; its broad leaves are a classic subject of Chinese brush painting. On this cup the leaves are rendered in layered green washes that spread across the flared rim, framing the fish below.

Why You'll Love This Teacup
The petal-shaped rim and wraparound koi-and-lotus painting give the cup a clear decorative identity that shows from every angle as you pour and sip. The 65 ml capacity matches traditional gongfu tasting portions, and the open, handleless shape lets you feel the warmth of the tea through the porcelain. Sold as a single cup, it also makes a considered gift for a tea lover who already has a pot.
Care Instructions
- Hand wash with warm water and a soft cloth or sponge; avoid abrasive scrubbers that can dull the painted glaze.
- Avoid sudden extreme temperature changes when rinsing.
- Keep away from harsh chemicals and strong detergents.
- Dry fully and store where the rim and foot ring will not be knocked against harder pieces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this cup have a handle?
No. Like most kung fu tasting cups it is handleless — you hold it between thumb and fingers at the flared upper wall, which stays cooler than the base, or cup it with both hands when the tea is very hot.
How much tea does it hold, and what is it good for?
About 65 ml — a few small mouthfuls, the standard portion for gongfu-style brewing where the same leaves are steeped many times. It also works well for any tea you like to drink in small, attentive pours.
Is this sold as a set with a teapot?
No. Each order includes one teacup (Tea cup x1). The cup is meant to pair with your own gaiwan or teapot, and buying several lets a host serve a small gathering.
How should I clean the painted surface?
Hand wash with warm water and a soft cloth, and avoid scouring pads or abrasive cleaners so the green lotus and red koi painting stays crisp. Rinse and dry after use rather than letting tea sit in the cup.
