Purple Clay Ceramic Incense Holder with a Koi Fish or Ox Watermill Scene
$53.59
The Purple Clay Ceramic Backflow Incense Burner pairs a two-tier unglazed purple clay body with a carved water scene of koi and an ox-driven watermill. A cone incense sits on the upper wheel-shaped tower, and as it burns, the smoke sinks through a small spout and pools in the wide lower basin, so the carved fish appear to drift through slow-moving water. A separate hole at the basin's edge also holds standard stick incense, and the compact footprint suits a tea table, desk, or reading shelf.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Koi: In Chinese folk tradition the word for fish sounds like the word for surplus, and the koi has long been regarded as a symbol of perseverance and abundance; here carved koi rest in the smoke-filled basin as if swimming through water. Ox and watermill: The ox turning a watermill was a familiar irrigation scene in traditional Chinese farm life, and the burner's upper tier is shaped like that wheel with the horned ox set beside it. These motifs are used purely as decorative references to a countryside scene of water, fish, and patient labor.

Why You'll Love This Incense Burner
- Two hand-carved scene options, the ox watermill and the koi, so you can pick the motif that fits your space.
- The matte purple clay keeps its warm brown tone without glaze, and the handmade finish makes each piece slightly different.
- One piece works two ways: backflow cones on the upper tower for the sinking-smoke effect, or a stick in the side hole for everyday use.
Care Instructions
- Let the burner cool completely before moving or handling it after use.
- Clear spent cones and ash with a soft dry brush or cloth; avoid soaking, detergents, and harsh chemicals.
- Wipe the surface with a soft dry cloth, and keep it away from prolonged moisture when not in use.
- Never leave burning incense unattended, and place it on a stable, heat-safe surface.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the burner come with incense?
No. The package includes the incense burner only, without incense. You will need your own stick incense and, for the sinking-smoke effect, backflow cone incense.
How do I get the smoke to flow down into the basin?
Place a backflow cone on the raised platform of the upper tower. The cone's hollow base lets the cooled smoke sink and pour out of the spout into the lower basin. Regular solid cones do not produce this cascading effect.
What is the difference between the koi and ox watermill options?
Both options share the same two-tier backflow form and purple clay material. They differ in the carved scene: one highlights the koi in the basin, the other the ox at the watermill. Choose based on which motif you prefer as decoration.
Will it fit on a small desk or tea table?
Yes. It measures about 4.29*5.31*1.97 in (10.8*13.5*5 cm), a compact footprint that sits well on a tea tray, shelf, or nightstand. Manual measurement means a slight deviation is possible.
