The Hand-Painted Silk Folding Fan opens to a wide black leaf painted with a white ink-wash dragon that sweeps across the fan face, finished with a lotus knot and tassel at the base of the black ribs. It folds flat to 26 cm, so it works as a handheld fan for warm days, a prop for traditional dance or costume, and a display piece on a stand.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Dragon: In Chinese tradition the dragon is a mythical creature long regarded as a symbol of power and authority, and one of the twelve zodiac animals; in decorative art it is traditionally paired with the phoenix, and the ink-wash style painting on this fan shows its coiled body, scales, and claws rendered in white against the black silk.
Koi fish: Several color variants of the koi design are offered, and in Chinese folk belief the word for fish sounds like the word for surplus, so koi have traditionally been regarded as a symbol of abundance and perseverance, with black-and-white paired koi appearing alongside yin-yang imagery.
Fan form: The folding fan itself is a longstanding handheld accessory in East Asian culture, used for cooling, performance, and as a surface for painting and calligraphy.

Why You'll Love This Folding Fan
- The painted scene spans the full leaf, so the design stays readable even when the fan is partly open.
- At 47 cm across when unfolded it moves real air, yet it closes to a 26 cm bundle that fits beside a bag.
- Ten motif options, from the ink dragon to paired koi, make it easy to match a performance theme or gift.
Care Instructions
- Keep the fan dry; do not wet the painted cloth leaf, as water can lift the ink colors.
- Avoid contact with perfume, lotion, hairspray, and harsh chemicals.
- Wipe the ribs with a soft, dry cloth and let any moisture evaporate before closing.
- Close the fan before storing, and keep it flat in a dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Open and close it gently at the ribs rather than pulling the leaf to avoid creasing the silk.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is the fan when it is open and when it is folded?
It unfolds to 47 cm wide and folds down to 26 cm long, with a folded size of 26*3*2 cm. These are manual measurements, so a slight deviation is possible.
Can I choose which painted motif I receive?
Yes. The listing offers ten motif options, including the dragon shown in the main photo, phoenix, crane, eagle, wolf, and koi fish versions. Select the motif you want at checkout; each fan carries the corresponding hand-painted scene across the leaf.
Will my fan look exactly like the photo?
Close, but not identical. Each fan is hand-painted from natural materials, so small irregularities and slight color differences from the photo are normal and part of the handmade character.
How do I clean and store it so the paint lasts?
Do not wash the leaf. Keep the fan away from water and chemicals, wipe the ribs with a soft dry cloth, and store it closed and flat in a dry place out of direct sunlight. Taking it off before sleep or washing, as noted on the listing, also helps protect the painted surface.
Is the tassel included, and is this fan good for display?
Yes, a lotus knot tassel hangs from the base of the ribs as shown. Because the painted scene spans the full leaf, many owners also prop the open fan on a small stand as a decorative display piece.
