The Handmade Bamboo Fan with Koi Fish, Lotus and Bird and Flower Painting is a traditional Chinese round hand fan: a finely woven silk face stretched over a circular bamboo hoop, painted with a classical scene of koi, lotus, or birds perched on flowering branches. The slender bamboo handle extends well past the fan head and finishes with a hanging silk tassel. It cools gently at the wrist during tea practice, garden strolls, and outdoor gatherings, curls for storage, and doubles as a decorative accent on a wall or dressing table.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
- Koi: In Chinese folk tradition the word for fish sounds like the word for surplus, so koi have long been regarded as an emblem of abundance, and the legend of koi leaping the Dragon Gate also makes them a traditional symbol of perseverance and achievement. On the painted versions of this fan, koi drift among lotus leaves across the round face.
- Lotus: Rising clean from muddy water to bloom, the lotus is traditionally regarded in Buddhist and East Asian art as a symbol of purity and quiet emergence, and it is one of the most enduring subjects of Chinese flower painting.
- Bird-and-flower painting: The blossom-and-sparrow scenes follow huaniao, a classical Chinese painting genre devoted to birds, blossoms, and branches, rendered here in soft brushwork over the woven face.

Why You'll Love This Fan
- The painted round face with its long bamboo handle and trailing tassel is instantly recognizable as a classical Chinese fan, not a printed souvenir.
- Each fan is hand-painted, so the brushwork and coloration vary slightly from piece to piece.
- The 24cm face and 50cm handle make it comfortable to hold or to display as decor, and a natural gift for anyone drawn to Chinese painting and tea culture.
Care Instructions
- Keep the fan away from water and prolonged moisture; the woven face and bamboo can warp if damp.
- Do not expose it to perfume, lotion, or harsh chemicals.
- Dust with a soft, dry cloth and never rub the painted surface hard.
- Store flat or hanging in a dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which painted design will I receive?
You receive the design you select: the bird-and-flower scene, persimmons, fruit, koi with lotus, or lotus pod, each on the same 24cm by 50cm fan. The tassel color is chosen at random regardless of the design you pick.
Is the fan big enough to actually use for cooling?
Yes. The face is about 24cm across, which moves a satisfying amount of air with a wrist turn, and the roughly 50cm bamboo handle gives you good leverage and a comfortable grip.
Can it be used as wall decor instead of a hand fan?
It works well that way. The painted round face hangs neatly as a decorative accent, and the long handle and tassel keep the traditional silhouette on display when the fan is not in use.
Why might my fan look slightly different from the photos?
Each fan is hand-painted on natural materials, so brushwork, tone, and small irregularities vary between pieces, and screen settings can shift colors slightly. This is expected of handmade work rather than a defect.
How do I clean and store it so the painting lasts?
Dust it with a soft dry cloth, keep it away from water and humidity, and store it flat or hanging in a dry spot out of direct sunlight. Avoid folding or pressing the painted face.
