The Handheld Silk and Bamboo Folding Fan is a classic hand fan with a painted fabric leaf on bamboo ribs, finished with a hanging tassel at the handle. The leaf carries a soft floral scene — pink lotus on sage green, pink begonia on cream gray, or white jasmine on gray green, depending on the version you choose — and the fan folds flat to 21cm for carrying. It is a cooling hand prop for summer outings, hanfu and tea-ceremony styling, photo shoots, and display on a stand or tray.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Lotus: Rising clean from muddy water to bloom on the surface, the lotus has traditionally been regarded as a symbol of purity and quiet emergence in Buddhist and South Asian tradition, and it is one of the most beloved subjects of Chinese flower painting. On the green version of this fan, pink lotus blossoms and broad leaves spread across the leaf between the ribs.
Begonia and jasmine: Both are old garden flowers of Chinese cultivation and familiar subjects of traditional bird-and-flower painting, prized for delicate blossom color and quiet fragrance. Here they appear as slender painted branches with pink blooms and small buds on the cream versions, and white blossoms with trailing greenery on the gray-green jasmine fan.
The folding fan itself: Folding fans have been carried in China since the Song dynasty as everyday objects that double as a portable painting surface, and the pleated leaf with visible ribs preserves that traditional look.

Why You'll Love This Fan
The painted scene spans the whole leaf, so the fan reads as a small piece of flower painting in the hand rather than a printed accessory. The bamboo ribs give it a light, crisp opening action, and it folds to 21cm — small enough for a tote or hanfu sleeve. Six painted versions and two tassel styles make it easy to match an outfit, a set, or a gift.
Care Instructions
- Keep the painted leaf dry; do not wash it. If needed, dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
- Close the fan along its original pleats before storing to avoid creasing the leaf at the wrong line.
- Avoid pressing heavy objects onto the open leaf and keep it away from direct heat.
- Store flat or standing in a dry place; the tassel can be gently straightened by hand.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is the fan when open and folded?
The listing states a folded length of 21cm and an unfolding size of about 38cm across. That makes it a full-size hand fan rather than a miniature, while still folding small enough to carry.
Is the fan leaf silk or polyester?
The material is listed as polyester with bamboo ribs. The leaf has the smooth, slightly sheer look of painted silk-style fan fabric, and polyester holds the painted print well with easier day-to-day care.
Which pattern should I choose, and can I pick the tassel color?
Options include Beige Green Lotus, Green Lotus, Green or Beige Begonia Flower, and Jasmine in wide or narrow fan versions, each 21cm, with ordinary or special tassel styles. The tassel color itself is sent randomly, as stated in the listing note, so choose the floral scene you want and let the tassel surprise you.
Can the fan be used as decoration instead of only for cooling?
Yes. Opened, the painted leaf displays the full flower scene, so many buyers set one on a display stand, tray, or shelf as a still-life accent, and it folds flat for storage afterward.
