Elephant Holding Leaf Purple Clay Backflow Incense Burner is a small seated elephant sculpted in matte, unglazed purple clay, grinning with wide ears and a straight-raised trunk. A backflow incense cone rests on the trunk tip; the smoke travels down the hollow trunk, pours from the elephant's mouth onto the broad leaf it cradles in its front paws, pools there like water, and spills over the leaf tip in a slow cascade. Left unlit, it simply reads as a charming clay figurine for a tea table, desk, or shelf.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Elephant: In Chinese folk tradition the word for elephant (xiang) was long read as a homophone of the word for auspiciousness, and elephants appear in classic peace motifs such as xi xiang sheng ping — the auspicious elephant heralding a peaceful age — so the animal has traditionally symbolized stability, gentleness, and quiet good cheer. This piece leans into that heritage through its pose rather than any promise: a smiling, grounded elephant seated upright, trunk lifted.
Purple clay: The material is purple clay (zisha), the unglazed brownish-purple stoneware with a long history in Chinese teaware, valued for its soft matte surface and fine sculpted detail — which is why the creases of the trunk and the veins of the leaf read so clearly.
Leaf basin: The leaf the elephant holds doubles as the catch tray for the descending smoke, turning the waterfall effect into the visual center of the design.

Why You'll Love This Incense Burner
- The waterfall effect is the point: Dense backflow smoke sinks through the trunk and spills over the leaf, giving a small table piece real movement.
- Soft, earthy look: Unglazed purple clay has a muted brownish tone and a tactile matte surface that fits tea sets and wooden furniture.
- Light and compact: At about 10.5 cm tall and 152 g, it moves easily from desk to shelf and packs well as a gift.
Care & Safe Use
- Let the burner cool before moving or cleaning; brush out cone ash with a dry, soft brush.
- The clay is unglazed — avoid soaking or detergents, and keep it away from standing water.
- Use only backflow cones (cones with a hole in the base) placed on the trunk holder.
- Set it on a tray or coaster, since the smoke cascade drifts onto the surface below the leaf.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it come with incense?
No. The package lists the burner only, without incense. You will need backflow incense cones — the kind with a hole through the base — to get the sinking-smoke effect.
Will regular stick incense work in it?
Stick incense will burn, but it will not produce the waterfall: the effect depends on cool, dense smoke from a backflow cone descending through the hollow trunk. For the design as shown, cones are what the piece is built around.
Where does the smoke end up — will it stain my table?
The smoke pools on the leaf and then spills over the tip onto whatever surface is underneath, which is part of the effect. Most people place the elephant on a small tray or coaster; occasional wipe-downs keep residue from building.
Is the unglazed clay difficult to keep clean?
It is low-maintenance if you avoid liquids: once cool, tip out ash and brush the surface with a dry soft cloth or brush. Because the clay is unglazed and handmade, tone and surface vary slightly between pieces.
How big is it, and is it stable?
About 7.4 by 7.9 by 10.5 cm (2.9 by 3.1 by 4.1 in) and roughly 152.5 g, with a broad seated base and four paws plus the leaf for support. It is palm-sized and sits steadily on a flat surface — hand-measured, so allow slight deviation.
