This Koi Fish White Porcelain Teacup is a rounded, handleless tea bowl in smooth white porcelain, decorated with a hand-painted koi whose coral-red head and gilded scale-textured body trail into long flowing fins washed in pink, blue, and pale green. A vertical column of Chinese calligraphy and a small red seal sit beside the fish, completing the classic painted-and-inscribed composition. Sized for kung fu tea sessions, daily tea at the desk, or as a display piece on a tea shelf.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
- Koi fish: In Chinese folk tradition the koi is regarded as a symbol of perseverance, achievement, and abundance — the Chinese word for fish sounds like the word for surplus — and it remains one of the most familiar motifs in Chinese decorative art. Here the koi is painted mid-swim, its trailing tail sweeping across the curve of the bowl.
- Calligraphy and seal: The cup carries a four-character brush inscription with a red seal stamp, echoing the pairing of painting, calligraphy, and seal that has long defined Chinese literati art. The phrase is a traditional blessing wishing wealth, honor, and that things go as one hopes — a decorative sentiment, in the manner of a painted scroll.

Why You'll Love This Teacup
- Hand-painted koi work means no two cups are exactly alike — kiln conditions shift the colors and brushwork slightly from piece to piece.
- Four capacities (65ml to 200ml) cover both small kung fu tasting cups and a larger everyday mug for the desk.
- The white glaze gives the painted fish and calligraphy a clean, high-contrast ground, and the rounded form is a natural gift for tea drinkers.
Care Instructions
Rinse after use and wash with a soft sponge and mild detergent; avoid abrasive scouring pads, which can dull the hand-painted surface. Pouring boiling liquid into a chilled cup, or the reverse, risks thermal shock — warm the cup first. Dry fully before storing, and keep it away from hard knocks that can chip the rim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which cup size should I choose for kung fu tea?
For a kung fu tea setting, the smaller options are the natural fit: 65ml and 80ml are tasting-cup sizes suited to several short pours, while the 150ml and 200ml versions work better as a single large cup for everyday brewing at a desk.
Do the teapot and other pieces in the listing come with the cup?
No. Only the teacup is included; the other accessories shown alongside it are photo props and are not part of the package.
Will my cup look exactly like the one pictured?
Very close, but not identical. Each cup is hand-painted and fired at high temperature, and kiln conditions cause slight variations in color, brushwork, and design from piece to piece — that individuality is part of handcrafted porcelain.
How should I clean the painted design?
Use a soft sponge with mild detergent and rinse well. Avoid abrasive scrubbers, steel wool, and harsh chemicals, which can wear the painted surface over time, and dry the cup before storing it.
Is the cup comfortable to hold when filled with hot tea?
The rounded, handleless bowl shape is meant to be cradled in the palm, as is traditional with kung fu tea cups, and the smaller 65ml and 80ml sizes cool to a sippable temperature quickly after each pour.
