This Bodhidharma iron powder resin statue is a small seated figure of the Chan patriarch with his hands hidden deep inside his voluminous robe sleeves, a heavy brow, deep-set eyes and a textured russet beard set against a dark, matte grey-brown body. Cast from 80% iron powder and 20% resin, it has a weighty, metal-like feel at about 300 g while standing only about 10 cm tall — a quiet display piece for a desk, shelf or reading corner.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Bodhidharma (Daruma): In Chan (Zen) Buddhist tradition, Bodhidharma is the monk credited with transmitting meditation practice to China and counted as its first patriarch; traditionally remembered for long, unwavering seated meditation, his image has for centuries stood for perseverance and inward focus in East Asian decorative art. This figure presents him in that classic mode — seated, anonymous under his robe, gaze turned inward.
Hands hidden in sleeves: The pose of tucking the hands completely out of sight inside the sleeves is a longstanding convention of Bodhidharma iconography, used to read as withdrawn contemplation rather than action; here the sleeves fall in one smooth carved sweep over the lap.
Petal-edged seat: The figure rests on a low mat rimmed with scalloped petal shapes echoing the lotus, which, rising clean from muddy water, has traditionally been regarded as a symbol of purity in Buddhist art.

Why You'll Love This Statue
- Character at small scale: The fierce brow, carved beard and sweeping robe make the figure instantly recognizable even at about 10 cm.
- Weighty, metal-like body: The iron powder blend gives a solid heft and a matte, cast-iron surface character that plain resin lacks.
- Two finishes: Choose the rust version for a weathered, aged look or the polished version for a smoother metallic tone.
Care Instructions
- Display the statue in a dry spot; keep it away from prolonged moisture, splashes and humid rooms, since the iron-rich surface does not like water.
- Dust it with a soft, dry cloth only — no liquids, cleaners, perfume or chemicals.
- Handle with clean, dry hands and set it down rather than sliding it across hard surfaces.
- If storing it away, keep it dry and cushioned, separate from harder objects that could nick the finish.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the rust and polished versions?
Both are the same cast in 80% iron powder and 20% resin; the rust version has a weathered, matte aged surface and measures 10*7.6cm, while the polished version has a smoother metallic look at 10*7.1*7.1cm. Pick by the finish that suits your shelf.
Is this solid metal or resin?
It is a cast composite: 80% iron powder bound in 20% resin. That gives it a metal-like color, texture and a solid about 300g heft, while being lighter and less brittle than carved stone or solid cast iron.
Will the rust finish keep rusting or stain my shelf?
The aged look is the intended handcrafted surface, not active decay. To keep it stable, display the statue dry, never wipe it with a wet cloth, and place a felt or coaster pad underneath if your furniture finish is delicate.
Where does a 10 cm Bodhidharma display well?
Its compact footprint suits a desk, bookshelf, windowsill or meditation corner — give it clear space around it so the robe silhouette and beard detail read, and keep it out of direct splash zones like sinks and plant misters.
