This Lotus Buddha Purple Clay Incense Burner is sculpted as a dark, opening lotus in unglazed purple clay, with a white seated Buddha figure at the heart of the petals and a small side cup that holds a backflow cone so the smoke pours down the clay like water into a white lotus at the base. It is offered in Lotus Tathagata, Lotus Avalokitesvara and Lotus Ksitigarbha versions, and is sold without incense.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Buddha figure: In Buddhist tradition the seated Buddha is a longstanding symbol of compassion, tranquility and introspection, and here the white figure rests cross-legged with hands pressed together at the center of the piece, giving the whole sculpture its quiet focal point. The listing's three options — Tathagata, Avalokitesvara and Ksitigarbha — are all traditional figures of Buddhist art; Avalokitesvara in particular is traditionally regarded as an embodiment of compassion in East Asian Buddhist tradition.
Lotus: Rising clean from muddy water to bloom at the surface, the lotus is traditionally regarded as a symbol of purity and quiet emergence in Buddhist and South Asian traditions. In Buddhist art, enlightened figures are traditionally shown seated on lotus seats; this burner takes that convention literally, with the figure placed inside layered clay petals and a second white lotus catching the falling smoke at the base.

Why You'll Love This Lotus Burner
- The backflow channel turns ordinary cone smoke into a slow waterfall over the petal walls — a recognizable scene, not a plain holder.
- At about 1517 g net, the solid clay body sits steadily on a table or tea stand and reads as a substantial sculpture.
- Three figure versions and the two-tone white-on-dark clay make it a distinctive gift for tea, incense or meditation-corner styling.
Care Instructions
- Use only backflow cones in the side cup for the pouring-smoke effect; let everything cool before handling.
- Wipe the clay with a soft dry cloth; avoid water, perfumes, lotions and harsh chemicals.
- Empty cooled ash regularly, and keep the piece away from prolonged moisture.
- Never leave burning incense unattended, and place it out of reach of edges and curtains.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the three versions?
All three share the same lotus body and backflow design; only the sculpted figure at the center changes — Lotus Tathagata, Lotus Avalokitesvara or Lotus Ksitigarbha, each a traditional figure of Buddhist art used here as a decorative motif.
Does it come with incense, and what kind does it use?
No incense is included. The side cup is made for backflow (tower) cones, which produce the downward-pouring smoke; a standard stick incense can also be used if your version has a stick hole.
Why does the smoke flow downward?
Backflow cones burn cooler than upright sticks, so the smoke is heavier than air and sinks. The side cup sits above carved channels in the clay that carry the smoke down to pool around the white lotus at the base.
Is the piece heavy enough to stay put?
Yes. The listed net weight is 1517 g, and the broad clay base rests flat on a stable surface. Overall size is 14*9.8*2.8cm, measured manually with slight deviation possible.
Will mine look exactly like the photos?
Close but not identical. Each burner is handmade from natural purple clay, so small irregularities occur and the white-on-dark tones can vary slightly from the pictures depending on screen and lighting.
