The Handmade Ceramic Meditating Monk Figure Incense Burner with Round Ash Tray is a small earthenware scene: a cross-legged monk in a conical hat, hands pressed together, sits at the center of a speckled round ceramic tray, and a single short incense stick rests across the brim of his hat so the ash falls onto the tray below. The matte terracotta figure and the rustic glazed tray make it a quiet accent for a tea corner, reading desk, or shelf, and it is sold alone or paired with a 48-piece sandalwood incense set.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
- Meditating monk: The seated figure with palms pressed together echoes the joined-hands gesture long familiar in Buddhist cultures, and meditation imagery has traditionally been associated with stillness and introspection in Buddhist-influenced art. The figure is presented here as a decorative art reference.
- Conical hat as incense rest: The stick balances on the wide brim of the monk's straw-hat silhouette, a playful design touch that also drops ash neatly onto the tray.
- Burning incense: Incense has long been burned in Buddhist ritual and in East Asian scholar's studios, and this piece follows that decorative tradition of a small, slow-burning companion on a tabletop.

Why You'll Love This Burner
- The monk-and-hat design is instantly recognizable and charming, turning a plain stick of incense into a small tableau on the tray.
- The 11.5cm round tray catches ash, so desks and shelves stay clean during the roughly four-hour burn.
- Handmade ceramic means each figure and tray glaze varies slightly — a thoughtful gift for tea drinkers, readers, and anyone decorating a quiet corner.
Care Instructions
- Always burn incense on the ceramic tray, on a stable, non-flammable surface, and never leave a lit stick unattended or burn it while sleeping.
- Let the tray cool fully before emptying ash; wipe the ceramic with a soft dry or barely damp cloth and avoid soaking it, which can dull the glaze.
- Keep the piece away from drafts so the burning tip stays even, and out of reach of children and pets.
- Store dry; the unglazed terracotta figure can take on moisture and should be kept away from splashing water.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it come with incense sticks?
There are two options: the burner alone, or the burner with a 48-piece sandalwood incense set. The included sticks are 6.5cm and burn for about 4 hours each, so the set lasts a while with occasional use.
How does the incense actually sit on the figure?
The short stick rests horizontally across the brim of the monk's conical hat, held by the hat's slight curve, with the burning end extending out to the side. Ash falls down onto the round tray beneath rather than onto your furniture.
Is the tray big enough to keep ash contained?
The tray is about 11.5cm across and 0.5cm deep, sized for this short-stick style. It catches normal ash cleanly; just empty it after burns and place the whole piece on a stable surface away from edges and drafts.
Will the scent be strong in a room?
Sandalwood is a soft, woody scent rather than a heavy one, and a single 6.5cm stick gives a light, steady fragrance suited to a desk or tea corner. If you prefer a stronger presence, burn it in a smaller space.
Why might my piece look slightly different from the photos?
The figure and tray are handmade from natural clay and glaze, so surface tone, speckling, and small irregularities vary from piece to piece, and lighting can shift the apparent color. These variations are part of the handmade character.
