The Tibetan Ceramic Dragon Backflow Incense Burner with a Separate Lotus Base is a dark, matte ceramic sculpture of a coiled dragon with carved scales, whiskers and raised claws. A backflow cone rests on the crown of its head, and the smoke sinks from the dragon's open mouth into the separate lotus-form base below, pooling around a small glass orb like mist over water. It makes a quiet centerpiece for a shelf, desk or tea table. Incense is not included.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Dragon: In Chinese tradition the dragon is a mythical creature long associated with strength, authority and auspiciousness, and it has been a central motif in decorative art for centuries. Here the dragon's full body is modeled in relief - layered scales, flowing mane and claws - with the backflow smoke drawn down from its mouth as part of the design.
Lotus: Rising clean from muddy water to bloom, the lotus is traditionally regarded as a symbol of purity and quiet emergence in Buddhist and South Asian traditions. The separate base takes the form of an open lotus pod, and it is where the descending smoke gathers before drifting outward.
Product Details

- Size: Dragon King 3.9*4.3*9.4cm, Lotus Base 1.3*10.8*10.8cm, Incense Hole Diameter 2.6mm
- Material: Ceramic

Note: Sizes are measured by hand, so slight deviation is normal. The piece is handmade, so small irregularities in the carving and surface can appear, and lighting or screen settings may shift how the dark clay tone reads compared with photos. For safe use, never leave a burning incense cone unattended, and remove it before you leave the room or go to sleep.
Why You'll Love This Burner
- The backflow effect is the whole design: smoke falls from the dragon's mouth and pours over the lotus base, something a plain holder cannot do.
- Dragon and lotus arrive as two pieces, so you can lift the base away for cleaning or restyle the display.
- The matte dark clay and sculptural shape read as an ornament even when unlit, which makes it a distinctive gift for incense lovers.
Care Instructions
- Let the burner cool fully after use; cone ash collects on the base and can be tapped out or wiped away with a dry cloth.
- Wipe the ceramic with a soft dry cloth and avoid soaking or harsh cleaners that can dull the matte surface.
- Keep the 2.6mm incense hole clear of leftover cone fragments so the backflow channel stays open.
- Set it on a stable, heat-safe surface away from edges, and store it where it will not be knocked over.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of incense does this burner use?
Backflow incense cones. The finished cone sits on top of the dragon's head and its sinking smoke flows down through the piece. The listing gives an incense hole diameter of 2.6mm, so choose cones that match that seating size. Incense is not included.
Will regular stick incense work in it?
This piece is shaped for backflow cones, whose smoke sinks and creates the waterfall effect over the lotus base. Stick incense does not produce that cascading flow, so a stick holder would be the better choice if that is what you burn.
How much space does it need on a shelf?
The dragon measures 3.9*4.3*9.4cm and the lotus base 1.3*10.8*10.8cm, so the assembled piece takes up roughly a hand's width of shelf space and stands just under 10cm tall.
Is the lotus base attached to the dragon?
No - the package includes the incense burner and a separate lotus base. The base supports the piece and catches the descending smoke.
Is it safe to leave burning while I sleep?
No. As with any incense, never leave a burning cone unattended; extinguish it and let the burner cool before setting it aside or sleeping.
