Brass Hollow Fan Bookmarks with Tassel – Chinese Motif Metal Bookmark, 19 Pattern Options
$25.59
The Brass Hollow Fan Bookmark with Tassel is a page marker shaped like an opened folding fan: a scalloped upper panel of gold-toned brass cutwork frames a colored motif, radiating fan ribs form the lower half, and a silk tassel hangs from a small loop at the base of the handle. Nineteen motif options are listed, so it slides into a novel or journal as a recognizable accent piece or a gift for a reader.
Cultural Symbolism & Artistic Design
Fan Silhouette: The folding fan has been a longtime companion of Chinese scholars and artists, and its open arc — with the ribs spreading from a single pivot — is a familiar decorative form in Chinese folk art. This bookmark reproduces that silhouette in cut brass, with the scene set in the fan's upper panel.
Crane: In Chinese tradition the crane has long been regarded as a symbol of longevity and noble character, often shown in flight among clouds. The crane version carries that imagery across the fan's arc.
Dragon & Phoenix: The dragon is a longstanding motif in Chinese decorative art, traditionally paired with the phoenix as a combined auspicious emblem. Both appear among the nineteen listed patterns.
Koi Fish: In Chinese folk tradition the word for fish sounds like the word for surplus, and the koi is traditionally associated with perseverance and achievement through the Dragon Gate legend.
Butterfly: In feng shui tradition the butterfly is used as a motif associated with change and lightness, and in the shown design butterflies drift among blossoms across the open fan panel.
Lotus: Rising clean from muddy water to bloom, the lotus has traditionally been regarded in Buddhist and South Asian traditions as a symbol of purity and quiet emergence, and it appears as one of the flower motifs in the pattern range.

Why You'll Love This Fan Bookmark
- The fan silhouette with radiating ribs is instantly recognizable on the page, so the marker reads as a deliberate design piece rather than a plain strip of metal.
- At 0.4mm thick the brass panel slides easily between pages and sits nearly flat, while the silk tassel lies along the outside of the book.
- With nineteen motif options — butterfly, lotus, crane, dragon, phoenix, fox, deer, rabbit, koi, landscape and more — it is easy to match a reader's taste or collect several.
Care Instructions
- Wipe the brass with a soft, dry cloth after handling.
- Keep it away from prolonged moisture, perfume, lotion and harsh chemicals.
- Store it dry and flat, or between the pages of a book you are not reading, so the thin fan edges are not bent.
- Like other copper alloys, brass develops a soft natural patina with age; polishing with a dry cloth restores some of the original shine.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many patterns are there, and do I choose one?
The listing offers nineteen motif options, including butterfly, lotus, crane, dragon, phoenix, fox, deer, rabbit, koi, and landscape designs. Select the pattern you want at purchase; that is the design that ships.
Will such a thin metal fan bend or damage pages?
The brass is 0.4mm thick, which is what lets it slide between pages without bulging. Treat the cutwork gently, do not use it as a tearing tool, and avoid pressing the scalloped edge into paper, and it marks pages without harming them.
What kind of tassel does it have?
The listing describes a silk tassel attached to a small loop at the base of the fan handle, so it hangs below the book's edge while the fan panel stays at the top of the page.
Does the brass change color over time?
Copper and brass naturally develop a soft patina with handling and air exposure. Wiping with a dry soft cloth and storing it dry keeps the warm gold tone longer; some owners prefer the aged look.
Is the size practical for everyday books?
At 40*75*0.4mm (hand-measured, slight deviation) the fan panel is compact enough for paperbacks and journals while staying easy to spot when the book is closed.
